If you've been looking for a genuinely free, credible certificate to add to your resume, NASA is currently offering three online training programmes that are open to students anywhere in the world — including India — with no tuition fee and no NASA employment or affiliation required.

1. Open Science 101
This is NASA's flagship open science training, run under its Transform to Open Science (TOPS) initiative. It is a five-module course covering the principles of open science, how to plan and participate in open science research projects, and the legal and ethical considerations involved. Each module takes roughly 2.5 hours, and the full course runs about 12 hours in total.
Learners who complete it earn a digital badge and an Open Science Certification from NASA that can be added to a resume, CV or LinkedIn profile.
One honest note worth flagging: this course was temporarily paused in late 2024 while NASA rebuilt it into an updated version 2.0. 2. Open Science Essentials
This is the shorter, introductory version — a standalone, roughly 2-hour overview of open science concepts, covering open data, open peer review and collaborative research practices. It's designed for anyone who wants a broad understanding without committing to the full 12-hour Open Science 101 course.
Both Open Science 101 and Open Science Essentials are run through the same NASA landing page, and both are open to researchers, students and the general public — you don't need to be affiliated with NASA in any way to register.

3. Illinois Space Tech Academy
This one is slightly different — it's a free, open-source online course about NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate, built by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign under a NASA grant (Grant #80NSSC20K099) as part of NASA's Artemis student outreach programme.
The course is organised into four modules — Go, Land, Live, Explore — covering the technologies behind NASA's Artemis missions to the Moon and Mars: propulsion, entry and landing systems, and sustainable living in space. It's built around short expert video lectures (each under 30 minutes), and participants can earn a digital badge for completing each module.
