IIT IIM Placements 2025! Getting into the “American Dream” is the heart of thousands of Indian students graduating from premier institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). They want to secure their job positions at famous and top global-recognised companies.

For this purpose, they start migrating to the US through the H-1B visa route. But there are ongoing tensions, which are the sweeping changes that came forward in visa application and even at the time of preparation for the placement season by final-year students in IITs and IIMs.

Many of them are wondering and stressed over the new rules because those rules are derailing the opportunities. Through this post, I have delved into all the intricacies and highlights IIT IIM Placements 2025 scenario.

The H-1B Rule Changes: IIT IIM Placements 2025

Many students are anxious about the placement because of H-1B visa changes. As per the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) data, we can note the scale of the shift. However, the number of eligible registrations dropped sharply to 3,43,981 from 4,70,342 in FY 2025-2026.

Therefore, previous year, we witnessed a decline of nearly 27%. This showcases that due to the tightening of the policies as well as higher scrutiny, fewer international professionals are applying or being considered. Especially for the indian students, the chances of visa applications have reduced. Not only this, but they also limited the global mobility as well as the uncertainty regarding post-study employment in the US.

Limited Impact on IIT Placements—For Now

This is not a dramatic turn; in fact, this is a symbol that will only make an immediate impact on IITs because the International placements from IITs have historically accounted for just 5–10% of total offers, not more than this.

Take the data from recent years:

Institute Year Total Offers (Phase 1) International Offers
IIT Delhi 2024-25 1200 50
IIT Kanpur 2024-25 1109 28
IIT Bombay 2023-24 1475 78
IIT Hyderabad 2022-23 621 55

From the above table, you can easily know that the best campuses, international placements are a minority. In fact, most of the offers are from Indian multinational corporations, domestic startups, and consulting firms.

As per the words of Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani and former IIT Delhi Director, “the effect would be more cascading than immediate.”

What About Management Graduates? IIT IIM Placements 2025

At the IIMs, the situation is slightly different but broadly aligned. Prof. Himanshu Rai, Director of IIM Indore, pointed out that, unlike in the early 2000s, when global opportunities in the US were expanding, today’s graduates are less dependent on foreign placements.

While a few still aspire for Wall Street or Silicon Valley roles, the majority focus on consulting, finance, FMCG, and tech leadership roles within India or Asia-Pacific. The US remains attractive, but students now also eye destinations like the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Dubai.

According to Rai, students with strong academic credentials and relevant experience can still access global opportunities—often through alternate visa routes such as the L-1 visa. However, he stressed that the real challenge lies with graduates from non-premier institutions, who may find it increasingly difficult to enter the US job market.

End of the American Dream—or a New Beginning? IIT IIM Placements 2025

The changes in the rules and regulatory policies led to a decline in H-1B registrations, combined with new restrictions. This highlights a shift that could be long-term. According to Neeti Sharma, CEO of HR firm TeamLease Digital, notes that companies are already reducing their reliance on US-bound hires.

Alert students! The competition for global roles will increase in the near future because of fewer overseas opportunities from tier-2 and tier-3 colleges. If you are one of those who have job-ready, niche skills, only then will you stand out from all the odds.

On the other hand, there is also a perspective that India’s domestic market is booming. The recent start-ups that are connected to AI, fintech, space-tech, and climate-tech startups are rapidly growing and touching new heights every day. From which, fresh graduates may find equally exciting challenges at home.
