The Gen Z Nepal took a bold step against corruption, nepotism, and injustice. On almost all social media platforms, people are speculating about this particular issue that turned out as a dramatic turn. However, this protest is called the Gen Z protest, which demands systemic change and accountability from their leaders.
This resulted in 19 deaths and over 300 injuries because the government’s response was starkly contrasting, with police opening fire on protesters. Many people are questioning the government’s motives and actions, as this is the use of force, which has widespread outrage.
If this continues to carry forward, then it will unfold a serious situation in which it’s clear that Nepal’s youth will not be silenced, and their demands for a corruption-free future will only grow louder. The Gen Z Nepal Protests: A Generation’s Cry for Change
As you all know, the fact that this protest was started by Gen Z, so the government, after seeing all the destruction caused by them, decided to ban 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube, for failing to register with the authorities.
But here is not solely the matter of banning social media or the future without social media, but also a generation’s desire for transparency, accountability, and fairness. In the protest, there are people who are school children and college students, who took to the streets, chanting slogans like “Stop the ban on social media, stop corruption, not social media” and “Youths against corruption”.

Think about it for a moment, as we lost 17 lives! Can you imagine? Seventeen young people, many of them with dreams yet unfulfilled, futures yet unwritten, and contributions yet to be made, are gone forever.
On the other hand, it is very difficult for the parents who send their children to school and receive the unthinkable news that their son or daughter has been shot—not in war, not in some distant conflict zone, but by their own police, their own system, their own government.
Police Brutality on Gen Z Nepal: A Disturbing Response
The response of the police officers to the protest has been disturbing, with reports of tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition being used against the protesters. Yes! You have heard right! You are now thinking about humanity? right? Where has humanity gone? This resulted in the death of at least 19 people, with many more injured.
On various social media platforms, people are criticising the response of the government because of the exploitation of human rights! Therefore, human rights organisations are calling for an impartial investigation into the violence.
Human Rights Concerns: A Pattern of Impunity
This is not for the very first time or a shocking thing to watch, especially in Nepal! In the past years, the government of Nepal has taken many steps like this before! Yes! It is not a new phenomenon. Not only this, but also the government typically announces opaque official inquiries and offers financial compensation to victims’ families, but takes little to no action against the responsible security personnel.

After all this irregularity in the nation, the government took its final decision to ban social media platforms has been defended as necessary for law enforcement and sovereignty. After the ban, critics again argue over this move of the government, as it showcases a thinly veiled attempt to suppress dissent and limit free speech.

As you all know, the world watches how Gen Z people are standing up for their rights, which are violated by the government. They do not let the truth be twisted! The international community must pressure the government to hold those responsible for the violence accountable and ensure that the rights of the protesters are protected.
