Institutes with Excess Seat Allotments
The report provided by the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) reveals that in the final round of seat allotment at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the number of seats allotted surged and crossed the sanctioned capacity in several premier institutes. This showcases the demand for IT education.
Shockingly, the total allowance intake stood at 18,160, and the actual seats allotted were 18,188. There is access to 28 seats across 23 IITs. Let’s break this down, too
- IIT Bombay: Allotted 1,364 seats against a sanctioned capacity of 1,360, exceeding by 4 seats.
- IIT Delhi: Allotted 1,241 seats against a sanctioned capacity of 1,239, exceeding by 2 seats.

- IIT Hyderabad: Admitted 631 students against a sanctioned capacity of 630, exceeding by 1 seat.

- IIT Madras: Allotted 1,124 seats against a sanctioned capacity of 1,121, exceeding by 3 seats.

Institutes with Vacant Seats
There is only one institute with a vacant seat available, which is IIT BHU Varanasi. Through the resources, it admitted 1,588 students against a sanctioned capacity of 1,589. There is still 1 seat vacant. Let’s proceed further towards knowing more details about the trend and data.
Total Seat Capacity and Allotments
The total number of seats for 2025 in IITs is 18,160. In this, there are 3,632 female-only supernumerary seats. In the final round, the allotted seats were 18,188. From which
- 9 supernumerary DS seats
- 11 supernumerary foreign nationals/OCI/PIO (F) seats
- 12 supernumerary minimum cut-off seats
Female Representation

Government Initiatives
After this, higher authorities do take initiative as they announced plans to develop infrastructure to facilitate the education of an additional 6,500 students across five third-generation IITs (IIT Palakkad, Dharwad, Jammu, Bhilai, and Tirupati).
