Can you imagine, there is a learning environment where attendance isn’t mandatory. Yes for 0% Attendance Policy!  If you are a student, how chill-minded will you be? Sounds interesting? You all have the freedom to choose when and how you engage with your coursework. How stress-free will you learn your skills and pursue your dream life, right? What if I told you it is happening in real life? Shocking? So do I! 

However, it is of bold direction that is taken by IIT Dhanbad, which is an educational institute considering its potential 0% attendance and learning approach. You all know that every situation has its own pros and cons as well. If you consider only the pros and cons, then the situation will not be in your favour in the long term. 

On the other hand, if you work for both sides and maintain the balance! The situation will be in your favour, and you will grow and evolve more. Higher authorities have abandoned the traditional attendance policies so that students take ownership of their learning process, and they can also promote self-driven education.

After the implementation of the policy, students will manage their time effectively, prioritise their tasks, and engage with coursework in a way that suits their individual learning styles. As I have mentioned above, we should not only acknowledge the positive side but also be familiar with the negative side is also essential. 

While there are potential risks, such as some students falling behind, the benefits of increased autonomy and flexibility could lead to a more motivated and self-reliant student body. At last, they become lethargic and will not work because most student showcase their best efforts to complete the task when they are under pressure and under watchful eyes. 

Whereas the IIT Dhanbad team is so excited to see the forthcoming of their new paradigm,  it’s an exciting time for education, and the outcome could have significant implications for the future of learning. Not only this, but also, Students and educators are spreading controversies on various social media platforms.

Traditionally, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have maintained strict attendance policies, besides the fact to implementing the zero attendance policy. In some schools, colleges, and universities, the curriculum follows some strict guidelines, for example: 

  •  IIT Bombay requires students to maintain 80% attendance, with provisions for condonation under special circumstances.
  • IIT Guwahati mandates 75% attendance, below which students may not be allowed to write end-of-semester examinations.
  • IIT Madras has a 100% attendance policy, with a 15% exemption for medical reasons.
